From the export data of 2009, the export value of Chinese engineering machinery was 7.121 billion U.S. dollars, down 39% year-on-year. The import value of construction machinery in 2009 amounted to 4.773 billion U.S. dollars, down 16% year-on-year.

The monthly export value of Chinese construction machinery in 2009 was approximately equivalent to the basic level in 2007. The export figure of 2008 was very high, so the year-on-year growth of 2009 was negative. Taking into account of the pick up of external demand in 2010 and low base of the overall data in 2009, the year-on-year growth of export value is expected restored to the level of 50% in 2010. Because of the strong demand from Chinese domestic market, the decline of import value was not very obvious in 2009. As of 2009 November and December, the year-on-year data had turned positive, showing quite obvious recovery. It is expected that the import value of construction machinery will increase about 30%.

Now we talk about the current condition about construction machine leasing industry. Our country’s construction machine leasing industry starts later than foreign countries’, and the scale is not big enough. The origin of this industry dates back to the 1990s, and with the ever increasing development of the enterprises, state-owned, private, joint venture, personal construction machine enterprises develop rapidly, for example, in Beijing, the numbers of the companies which is engaged in leasing are 400.

Here are the questions which the enterprises care about.  The key to determine whether the transaction is success or not is the leasing price, and the proportion of this factor is about 25.8%,which is followed by the band reputation of the leasing company, which is about 20.4%. The questions which the enterprises care about are rent arrears which occupy 50.7% of the whole, the standardization of the market which is 46.4%, the third one is the development of the band.

According the survey, here are some advices for the future development of this industry. Firstly, we should change the business concepts, and create new kinds of leasing mode. Secondly, build new leasing enterprises which are more professional and have their own bands and scale. As is known to all, the quantity of enterprises which are more professional and have their own bands and scale in machinery represents the developing level of the whole machinery. Thirdly, apply scientific managing method, and lower the credit risk. Fourthly, create differentiated services, and improve the competitiveness of the enterprises. Focusing on selling and ignoring service is the general problem existing in today’s construction machine leasing machinery, the conception of doing well in service is not only focusing on improving the satisfaction of the existing service, but also thinking about how to apply customers with underlying demand. So improving the service quality and making diverse service projects to satisfy customers will increase the quantity of the leasing transaction.

In a word, let government authorities, industry association and enterprises cooperate with each other fluently, and make a just, fair, orderly environment for the leasing market.

Thirdly, the environment of the construction market is becoming better, at the present, a lot of issues in construction market exist, but the general trend about domestic market is towards the sound, the standardization and the perfection of the one.

Fourthly, more and more foreign investment flow into construction companies in China, and it brings the fierce competition among construction market, through the competition, we can reduce the gap between domestic and overseas marketing.

In a word, from now on and in the following years, it is a good opportunity to develop the construction, although we may meet a lot of challenges, we can tackle them and have our own market occupation in the construction market.

At present, during a critical period of Chinese economy, China is vigorously expanding domestic demand, accelerating infrastructure construction and upgrading industrial transformation. In the next decade years, the investment in large infrastructure projects will continuously increase, and the roads, railways, urban construction, new energy, water conservancy projects will grow constantly. The peak of large-scale urbanization will come. In face of the great market prospects, Chinese enterprises should work together to build a community to conduct production and technology research, through which forming core competitiveness in the industry. The crane enterprises, parts factories and research institutes should strengthen cooperation with each other and promote Chinese crane industry to develop from the phase of imitation and low-end products to creation and high-end products.

Chinese construction machinery industry has been developing rapidly for consecutive 6 years. In accordance with industry practice – the equipments need major overhaul after used for 5~8 years, so it means that the demand for second-hand construction machinery will increase significantly. According to relevant statistics, the trading volume of second-hand construction machinery in China has exceeded 100 billion Yuan in 2009, with an over 20% growth rate. Some industry experts believe that Chinese second-hand equipment industry will realize industrial management and form an industrial chain, which integrated with recycling, processing (maintenance, renovation, re-manufacturing), distribution, import and export as whole. However, without assessment criteria and clear property rights, Chinese construction machinery has not been entitled the right credit sales through bank mortgage and finance lease, which stop some high-qualified equipments entering market.

U.S. construction equipment manufacturers suffered an estimated 43 percent decline in business in 2009, according to a survey conducted by the industry trade group Association of Equipment Manufacturers.

Respondents to the survey of U.S.-based companies on average expected a 5 percent increase in business in 2010, followed by gains of 15 percent in 2011 and 14 percent in 2012, not enough to erase severe losses of both business and jobs. The outlook for the export-driven industry is only a little less dismal outside U.S. borders.

For Canada, 2009 business decreased an estimated 34-percent overall. Respondents expected a 2010 increase of 7 percent, a 14 percent increase in 2011 and an 11percent increase in 2012.

Industry business to the rest of the world was expected to close out 2009 with losses of 34 percent, followed by a 2010 gain of 7 percent and growth of 13 percent in 2011 and again in 2012, according to the AEM survey.

“Even with a modest rebound in the next few years, the construction equipment industry will still be down by double digits, and there will still be double-digit industry unemployment,” said AEM President Dennis Slater. “This is not surprising given the continued instability of the housing market and no long-term commitment to America’s roads, rail, airports, water distribution and ports to move people and goods efficiently and safely, and to compete effectively in the global marketplace.”

Survey respondents said the state of the overall economy, including credit availability, interest rates and consumer confidence levels will influence construction equipment sales in the coming years. Housing starts and highway funding levels will also play a major role in any business rebound. Other major factors are the strength of the U.S. dollar and international business, since the industry is export-intensive, said AEM.

AEM is the North-American based international trade group representing the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. Each year it surveys its construction equipment manufacturer members about expected sales of the machines that build and repair roads, bridges, houses, offices, schools and other infrastructure in America and worldwide.

FORT PIERCE — The second phase of earthquake relief for Haiti is under way as 200 tons of heavy equipment and building materials are being loaded onto a cargo ship Monday at the Port of Fort Pierce.

Once full of supplies for Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, the Caribe Star 1 is expected to set sail Monday night and arrive Friday morning at the dock of a former cement factory near Port-au-Prince.

As the supplies and equipment were being positioned at the port Monday morning, Luther Harrison, director of North American projects for Samaritan’s Purse, said the Boone, N.C.-based charity already had a team of 60 in Haiti when the earthquake hit.

Since then, he said, 19 medical personnel at the Baptist Haiti Mission Hospital in Fermathe southeast of Port-au-Prince have been treating wounds, performing surgery and caring for the sick. Also, 40 Samaritan’s Purse staffers are distributing rolls of plastic for temporary shelter, solar flashlights, blankets, community water filters and water purification packets.

“We’ve been partnering with (Fort Pierce-based) Missionary Flights International to fly in food and medicine,” he said. “Now it’s time to send in the big stuff, the stuff that’s too big to put on a plane. We’re coming out of the emergency phase and into the recovery phase. The whole infrastructure down there has been destroyed, and we have to rebuild every aspect of it.”

Dr. David Gettle, chief medical adviser for Samaritan’s Purse, said in a prepared statement that wounded and sick earthquake survivors “are coming to us by the busloads. Without the ability to transport supplies through the rubble-strewn streets, we will not be able to treat them.”

Cargo on the Caribe Star 1 will include excavators, hydraulic hammers, a bulldozer, dump trucks, a tractor-trailer, flatbed trucks, vans, pickup trucks, Bobcat loaders, plastic pipes, plastic sheeting and lumber.

Harrison said half the vehicles were bought just last week at sites as far-flung as New Jersey, Arkansas and Virginia.

Getting all the equipment to Fort Pierce in a hurry should have been a logistical nightmare for the faith-based nonprofit headed by Franklin Graham, son of evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham.

“God has been steering us in the right channels,” Harrison said.
